It’s been really easy for me to build a good social life here in Lima. It seems that almost every day I get a good dose of socializing with friends in. I’ve become close friends with several of the other students who came in our group and together we like to travel to other districts in Lima. Some days we get on a combi to Miraflores and walk through the Inca market or find a good place to eat and then go dancing at the discotecas. On the weekends we might take a 20 minute taxi ride to Barranco to eat at the Burrito Bar and after have a beer at one of the many popular bars. On the weekends I like to go to San Bartolo to swim at the beach and in the evening head to my family’s beach house to drink chilcanos and hang out with my family. During the week after class I might end up with some friends at one of the two popular malls in the area, El Polo or Jockey. There’s always something new and fun to try in Lima. And along the way we always meet kind, helpful people who we can practice speaking Spanish with. Sometimes we even make friends who can give us good advice on the fun places to visit in Peru. The most difficult part about spending lots of time out and about is keeping up with homework as well as keeping in touch with my Peruvian family. I have found that it’s been to plan a time to work on homework. Without planning this it’s easy to get distracted with opportunities to go out and fall behind with homework. And despite food and transportation being relatively cheap here, the cost of spending a day out adds up. It’s important to watch what you spend and try to budget your day or weekend. The social life in Lima is great! |
